Souter Johnnie (John Davidson) was a drinking pal of Robert Burns and featured
in the Burns poem “Tam o'Shanter”.

In case you were wondering, a souter was a shoemaker and the cottage
contains many interesting exhibits.

Within the ruins - out in the fresh air - is the font from Crossraguel Abbey
two miles north of here at which Robert Bruce, later to be King of Scotland
was christened in (presumably) 1274.
