St Monans, Fife
These are the windmill and salt pans just to the east of the village of St Monans. The windmill was used to pump seawater into the salt pans and the heat to evaporate the water to leave the salt was provided by the plentiful supplies of coal, locally. These photos were taken in late afternoon light (in early October) to help show the contours of the salt pans and height of the windmill. 
For a small deposit (cash is preferred) you can borrow the key to the windmill and take a look around inside. There's no actual charge to do this as you get the deposit back in full. Ask at the local Spar grocer or Post Office in the nearby village. 
At this height you can easily see Pittenweem in the distance. That's the edge of the old swimming pool at the bottom right. The Isle of May can just be seen through the mist on the eastern horizon. |
