Kingsbarns (Fife Ness) Harbour, Fife
This is a set of three photos of the old ruined harbour at Cambo Ness in the East Neuk of Fife,
not far from the village of Kingsbarns. The harbour's earliest record is from 1537 when it was used to collect taxes and Customs dues for the Burgh of Crail as well as acting as a fishing port for the village of Kingsbarns.
The harbour was extensively rebuilt by Robert Stevenson in 1813 to serve the building of the Isle of May
lighthouse and was an important point in the selecting and shaping of the stone for that construction. Marks on the rocks are still visible from where the lighthose parts were assembled on shore as a test-bed before being taken over to the island. (The plan is to add photos of them to the page in the spring.) The Isle of May light was turned off in 1887 when the North Carr Lightship was put in place seven miles away.
From further back you can see not only the edge of the Kingsbarns golf course but also the St Andrews Bay
golf centre on the left horizon. As you can see by the busy car park this is a popular beach, even on a brisk day in November.
