Bailey Bridge, Irvine, North Ayrshire
This is on the A71 in Irvine As you can see after a gap of only about 38 years the temporary bridge was finally replaced with something a little more permanent. The new bridge was planned to be opened a few months after these were taken, meaning that this main road to the heart of Irvine's shopping centre was closed for the best part of a full year. This was not popular with the local shopkeepers and residents, not surprisingly. You can see that if the builders wanted to get from one side of the river to the other they either had to walk up to the footbridge and back down again or drive three miles round.
In this view you can see both ends of the main road as they approach the bridge. This view showed that three of the four anchor points for the arches of the new bridge were in place, along with much of the main supports on either bank.
From more north-east and looking virtually along the line of the A71.
This shows the whole site and in the top left is the Irvine Tesco store,to help you locate the area. The full-sized images available to clients are about 70 times the size of the images shown here and as you would expect they show a great deal more detail than the .jpg website versions.
