Dunskey Castle on the Mull of Galloway

This castle is located a mile south of Portpatrick and about 10 miles from Stranraer.
As you can see the castle is on an outcrop jutting out towards the North Channel of the
Irish Sea. It's basically a towerhouse that was built in the mid 16th century by the Adairs,
the same people who built the castle of St John in Stranraer. It was extended in the early
17th century (the long wing running north towards the camera viewpoint) but by 1700 the place
was derelict. Like so many defended houses it was built on the remains of an earlier house,
dating back to around 1320 or so, but that was destroyed in a local skirmish around 1500.

A little closer in. The ditch along this side of the castle, with the footpath built over it
on a sort of land bridge, was part of the earlier defences.

Looking from further inland and into the light. These photos were taken in late September 2007.
